Are Sequins Too Dressy for Day?

I love sequins! How do you rock them during the day?

You happen to be talking to a gal who thinks a pair of sequined ballet flats is pushing it for day—unless you’re either 13 years old, or 23 years old and independently wealthy, without a job or a boss who cares whether you dress like a tightrope act. But I think I'm all alone on this one.

Some people—and by some people I mean personal stylist Darcy Camden—say you can even get away with a sparkly top during the day. Be sure to stay clear of sequined boho maxi skirts (so not professional) and sequin minis (too Studio 54). "Choose a tank with sporty stripes in black or white," suggests Camden, who adores this one from Vera Wang's Lavender Label. Camden suggests pairing the top with a structured bottom, such as sharp black slacks, and a "sophisticated” jacket. "I love the contrast of a menswear tweed jacket over a glittery tank."

If that's the look you choose, fight the urge to pile on the jewelry, of course. You don't want to attract crows or other animals entranced by shiny objects. There is also no need to be seen from space. "Opt instead for a neck scarf, simple earrings and a structured bag," Camden says.
