What's up with celebs painting one nail on each hand a contrasting color? What color combinations do you recommend?

We here at mystyle love ourselves a good nail polish trend. And with celeb trendsetters like Vanessa Hudgens, Rumer Willis and Kelly Rowland all trying out the rogue nail, we have a bonafide manicure fad on our hands. But just where did this new style come from? And should you try it out yourself? We got the dish on the digits from the founder of All Lacquered Up, Michelle Mismas. Here's what the nail guru had to say:

According to Mismas, the polish fad has actually trickled down from the runways. "During New York Fashion Week, the team at CND created "cocktail nails" consisting of pearls, rhinestones and metal to be worn on the ring finger nail in place of actual jewelry," dished the nail expert. While we'll save the nail hardware for Lady Gaga, the concept has been, "translated to everyday by polishing one nail on each hand with a contrasting hue as an "accent nail." This we can get on board with!

As for pleasing color combos, you've got to go to the color wheel for inspiration. Mismas recommends finding complimentary colors (the ones that lie opposite to each other on the color wheel) that will pop on your hands. And she even has some examples for us color-challenged folk. "For summer, think coral and teal, orange and blue or light pink and mint," and the trend can go right into fall with, "gold and purple or silver and black," coaches the nail tech.

If you're looking for a way to ease into the trend, consider staying in the same color family. For example, a cantaloupe orange manicure with an accent tangerine hue can look just as stylish as the bolder combos. On the other hand, if you want something a little louder than just plain polish, consider adding glitter to one nail like this blogger did or try OPI's Shatter polish. However you paint it, you can't go wrong with this season's lastest nail trend.
