Ask Style: How to Accessorize Two-Tone Dresses?

I'm seeing a lot of two-tone dresses. How do you go about accessorizing those?

It's actually easier than you think. The first trap to avoid: Don't choose one of the tones as the color of your shoe or handbag if both colors are in huge blocks. When you have a bold dress like that, style maven Michael O'Connor says it's wise to either go with metallics or even—yes, really—a third color.

But how to know which metallic? Or which color?

First, the metallics. Easy, O'Connor says: If the colors are cool, go with silver. Otherwise, go gold.

Onward. How on earth would you add a third color to a two-toned ensemble? Again, it's about color families, O'Connor tells me. "It's really about a color family tone," O'Connor advises. In other words, if you have a two-toned dress in red and blue, throw in a purple shoe or bangle to pull everything together.

One other note: What if the dress has more of one color than the other, such as the black-and-nude Alexander Wang once sported by Rihanna and Paris Hilton? In that case, simply choose accessories that highlight the accent color, O'Connor says.
