Ask Style: How to Throw a Successful Clothes Swap Party?
Tue., Apr. 19, 2011 6:00 PM PDT by StyleSpy
In the spirit of Earth Week, I want to throw a clothes-swapping party with my girlfriends. Any tips to make the event a success?

We love an excuse for a good party, and if it's in the spirit of being green, you can count us in! (Er, we're invited, right?) We caught up with eco-lifestyle curator Stacie Krajchir to get the skinny on throwing your very own stylish swap.
Most of us have tons of stuff in our closets we no longer need or want, so a clothes-swapping party is a "wonderful way to gather good friends, socialize, and kick up your recycle and reuse factor while scoring some nearly new threads," advises the eco expert. (We're thinking our neglected velour tracksuit circa 2001 is about to get a new lease on life.)
For your own clothing swap, Krajchir offers a few easy guidelines to throwing a fuss-free event:
• Create an online invite—paperless equals eco-friendly! Ask friends to go through their closets and pull out things they no longer wear, want or like. Include which categories of items your friends should bring. Some swaps are denim or clothing only, while others include shoes, accessories and even household and child-appropriate items.
• Invite a variety of similarly sized women across the board, so more items will be successfully swapped out.
• Suggest a potluck and have each swapper bring a dish or beverage—no one likes to shop hungry!
• Designate a "dressing room" zone, which can be a bedroom or screened-off area, and make sure you have at least two full-length mirrors available.
• Put numbered pieces of paper into a hat and have each swapper draw a piece of paper upon arrival, to decide who goes first. Depending on how much clothing is available for round two, you can go around the group again backward.
• Have a mini fashion show, so everyone can show off her new treasures.
• At the end of the swap, donate all remaining items to your local thrift store or women's shelter.
Before your gals hit the road with their new threads, ask if someone else would like to host the next swap to keep the recycle/reuse trend alive. Now that's fashion-forward thinking!
