Ask Thom: How to Make My Great Room Great?

Allison's Great Room
Thom Filicia

My husband and I have been married for just over four years and have two small kids. We just bought our first house, but want it to feel like our home. We spend all our time in the great room. I'm a stay-at-home mom so I spend a lot of time there. We have a big brown couch, a huge gold TV thing (that I love), and a diagonal fireplace (that I hate). How do I make it all work?

Keep reading to see Thom's answer!

The key to making this big room work with all of your really great pieces is by choosing the right color for the walls. It has to be one that you love so that the space feels warm and inviting and personal. But it's also got to be gutsy enough to actually connect everything.

A really wonderful navy blue could be beautiful. However, I don't know about those red curtains. You will want to go with something more neutral for the window treatments if you decide to go with the blue walls.

I think the fireplace looks fine. Once you paint the walls, the whole thing will come together.

    4. Hi Thom,I am sorry to write via this email. I just pray that your will accept to come and help my mother. After serving his country and working hard for the last 60 years, my dad lost his job. My mom who stayed home to care for my brother and I and homeschooled us is deeply sad. I know she hides to cry and smiles when she is with us. Our home is empty and we have received bank papers, I do not know what will happen.I know it is too much to ask, but I wonder if you could come and transform the house for her to be happy even if is for a month. Again I am sorry to trouble you. Thank you and G_D bless.Nana
