Can I Do a Major Makeover on My Own?
Fri., Jul. 17, 2009 7:00 PM PDT by Jeannie Mai
What can I do to pull myself out of the style rut I've been in lately?
—Kathi, Los Angeles
New How Do I Look? host Jeannie Mai is taking over for today's installment of Ask Style. Keep reading for her answer!
I'm not kidding when I say this: First, ask the famous question "How do I look?"
No, seriously, Kathi! The premise of the show is truly one that works. I would gather three of the most VIPs around you. Two can be close friends or family with opinions you respect, and one should be someone with a fashionable edge you admire. Command yourself to have an open mind, then ask them to give you their brutally honest answers to the following questions:
Upon first impression, what does my style say?
Does the way I look represent the person you know me to be?
Do you feel my style flatters my body?
The conversation these questions spark should guide you to where you need to focus next.
Is the size of your clothing flattering? If not, look at your body honestly (and lovingly!) and work with your "team" on finding pieces that accentuate your assets and downplay your problem areas.
Do you need an image overhaul, or just a few key signature pieces? If your style doesn't reflect who you really are, you may have to spend some time thinking about the image you want to present. Keep that in mind as your fashion mission statement whenever you consider adding a piece to your wardrobe.
Next, schedule a shopping date with each of your VIPs to find out what they envision you in. Have a li'l fashion show of your own as you try on the pieces your friends pick, and develop your personal taste though these people you love. Of course, not everything they pick will look great, but you will gain a better understanding of what works and what doesn't as you try things outside your comfort zone.
The best part is, you'll bond more closely with your trusted fashion friends—and with that gorgeous woman within you. Enjoy your journey!
An all-new season of How Do I Look? premieres Thursday, July 23, at 9/8c. Don't miss it! And if you want the Jeannie treatment in person, apply now to be on the show!

6. living here in Hawaii is awesome. But as far as fashion go's we the people have a confusing idea of what great fashion is. Becaue we are influanced by our mothers and grandmothers fashion starts with cover that and oh don't where that. Dis not da mainland you know. W ea you going? only to da stoa yeah... Some Hawaiian humor. Okay, Im a mother of 3 and in my fourties. I need help!!! oh boy really need to look more glam then gram( grama like dress) hehehe. I love watching your program everything looks great. P.s I found that our stores have nothing. our malls look like the 99 cent store gone color. And those that have great clothes will cost you an arm and an leg and they're not even a name brand to say hey... lol
