Meet Mel B.'s Stylist
Sun., Sep. 5, 2010 6:00 PM PDT by Blair Late
Meet the men behind some of the dazzling looks you see each week on Mel B.: It's a Scary World—and get some A-list fashion tips, too!
When I met Mel the first time, I must say I was quite nervous. I come from a boy band on a much smaller scale than the Spice Girls, so Mel B. was like a musical goddess to me! She changed the landscape of pop groups forever.
I felt at ease the moment I walked in the door. It was like we were old high school chums catching up. And her kids?! BEYOND ADORABLE! I have a 10-year-old sister, so I know what it is like to have young ones around; it is a full-time job, one Mel tackles every day effortlessly. She was clearly meant to me a mom.
But I had a mission: to bring my vision of style to Mel. Now, Mel is certainly NOT one of those clients you just throw something on and have her walk out the door to the red carpet. She takes her fashion very seriously, as she does everything else in her life. Coming from the South and being quite the Preppy Spice, I have a much different overall aesthetic from Mel's. She is much more edgy and willing to take risks than I am. So we started with her closet. And let me tell you: If you lived in New York City, you would be lucky if this closet were your apartment. It is fabulous and HUGE!
Mel and I decided to do what I call a "closet-cleansing consultation." Out with the bad, reinvent the old, and in with the new! We must have been there for hours, as we did not agree on everything. But once we finished I felt we had a great palette to work with, and I knew exactly what I needed to get to help accentuate her style.
Bottom line:
Like ANY working mom, Mel values comfort. She is always taking her kids from place to place, then off to a work meeting, then back home for dinner, then off to the studio. If it were up to her, she would wear leggings and a T-shirt every day. So we made a compromise: I would let her wear cute leggings and a fun tank top or a colorful tee if she would add sexy, bright patent-leather heels and then tie a silk scarf around her purses. And to be safe we'd sometimes throw a pair of flats into her purse so she'd have a second option if her feet got tired. But to be honest, Mel could run a 10k in Christian Louboutin heels; she is freaking SUPERWOMAN in HEELS!
So to all you working moms out there, take note. Leggings and cute T-shirts are a great alternative to workout clothes or jeans. Then add some "Spice" to your look like Mel does. That way you can be comfortable for your kids but still ready to take a picture if the paparazzi happen to be chasing you!
