What's the Deal With Streaks?

What is up with streaks? What colors are in? Where did this originate from?
—Melissa C., New Paltz, New York
Hey, here's a thought. Let's break up this answer into three streaklike chunks:
1. What is up with hair streaks?
Nothing good, apparently. "Rihanna has such a beautiful face and this look really ages her," says Rick Wellman, celebrity colorist and co-owner of the Patrick Melville Salon and Spa in NYC. "It's OK to have different shades to add texture and dimension, but this is overdone, and the prominent colors aren't in the same family. It's as if Rihanna is caught between the world of frosted ash and the world of a golden butter chunk."
2. What colors are in?
How about some subtlety? "As we get into summer, blended colors, shinier hair and warmer shades are in," Wellman tells me.
3. Where did this look originate?
Another place and time. "This look is very '60s and '70s inspired, when the frosted steel look was popular and soft, yellow pigments were nowhere to be found in hair color," Wellman explains.
Let's just hope this fad doesn't continue its streak.

1. I think she would look great if she used a semi permanent hair color in red gold base level 6 all over her hair so that both the black and white hair would be the same base.Of course the black would still be black but the white would now be a strawberry blonde. These colors she has are too contrasting. Plus warm colors compliment her. These highlights are too ash. But she's still a pretty girl with a great complexion.

4. The streaks are just a fun diversion from the usual. Why not? We're all here for awhile and the streaks don't hurt anyone!
