Brownie Pecan Pie
Wed., Sep. 5, 2007 11:26 PM PDT by Staff
Each week on Pantry Raid, Chef Michael Schulson works with novice cooks to prepare an extraordinary meal—using only the ingredients they already have on hand! Read on for the recipes he created with mother of seven Angela in this week's episode.
UPDATE: This recipe has been slightly revised since originally posted. The corrected version is below.
Brownie Pecan Pie
2 ready-made pie crusts
1/2 cup pecan halves
2 regular-size boxes brownie mix
Water
Eggs
Oil
Vanilla ice cream (optional)Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine each box of brownie mix with the number of eggs stated on the box and twice as much oil and water as listed on the box. (The extra oil and water creates more of a pie texture than a brownie texture.) Pour each batch into a pie crust and cover with pecan halves. Bake for 45-60 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream.
Finish out your meal with the other recipes featured in this episode: Spicy Sausage Calzones, Kid-Friendly Kebabs and Creamy Baked Potato Salad. Yum!

2. Wow, I accidently happened to watch Pantry Raid this morning. I became excited when I saw how easy and kid friendly these recipes are. I am making a grocery list right now. I have always wanted to make a great potato salad, but didn"t think I could. I am going to attempt it. Chef Michael Schulson is great in the kitchen, I feel like anything is possible! The presentation was beautiful and the kids were happy...what more is there....Thanks

3. Wow, I accidently happened to watch Pantry Raid last night. I became excited when I saw how easy these recipe are. I started to take notes and also went to the grocery to buy some of the ingredients I need. I like to cook but I don't have a good imagination to prepare something on my own. Chef Michael Schulson is great in the kitchen, wow, I will keep watching that program. Thanks for putting that show. It is awsome.

4. I love Michael's show & rewatched it tonight after I had tried a couple of the recipes. On the show Michael states that the Brownie Pie should be baked at 375 degrees. The online recipe states preheating the oven to 300 degrees w/no mention of the 375. Which is correct?

5. I would love to know the answer to that question also. When and if you find out the answer on what degree to cook the Brownie Pie please let me know.

6. PLEASE tell us if the oven should be set at 375 300!!! If cooking an hour I would think it has to be 300. Thanks.
Ann Sun, Sep 9, 2007, 8:19 AM
7. I tried the brownie pie recipe at 300 for an hour and it was aweful. Did not cook! I think it should be 375.
Jo Sun, Sep 9, 2007, 1:35 PM
8. I also tried the brownie pie - before I read the comments - at 300 - this cant be right. Please let me know the correct temperature

9. I just made this pie today, after watching the show. I cooked it at 375 for an hour, and it was FANTASTIC!! OMG, it was so moist and fudgy, that you only need and small slice to get your chocolate fix. I totally recommend this dessert, especially with vanilla bean ice cream.

10. Thanks for the great recipe. My kids loved it. Cooked it just like you said and it came out perfect. 300 for an hour and it was perfect. Had no problem. Keep up with the great recipes from our pantrys.

11. I too cooked the brownie pie at 300 for an hour and it was not a problem. I think though that it might have to do with volume. If you are using a box that's meant to cook in an 11x15" pan then that's too much! I used a caramel brownie one that was meant for a 12x12 square pan and it came out awesome!

12. i was wondering how many eggs and how much oil and water do i put in the mix if i am only doing one pie?
Charlotte Mitchell Wed, Sep 12, 2007, 11:24 AM
13. Just watched your show and have read comments regarding the brownie pie. Could please tell me what size box of brownie mix is used to make this two pie recipe? Also, some comments said they cooked the pies at 375 instead of 300. What is correct temperature? What changes in recipe would need to be made to make just one pie? This was the first time I watched your show and only saw a small portion. Would appreciate answers to my questions and thanks so much. Thanks. Charlotte Mitchell

14. I'm cooking the brownie pie right now and 300 did not work for me at all. i changed the temp to 350 but after reading the comments now i'm trying 375 but i may be to late because my pecans are starting to look to dark!!! i hope i make it!!

15. I just tried your brownie recipe and cooked it at 375 and it was perfect. I have never cooked before and found your show by accident and loved it. I guess there is hope for me after all!!! Keep up the good work.

16. I made this last night..mmmm! it is fudgy and out of this world...used Duncan Heins brownie mix- yum.

17. My 5 year old son helped me make this dessert and had so much fun making it (and licking the bowl of course). However, I'm going to agree with a few previous posters regarding the cooking temperature. I tried it at 300 degrees for an hour and when I checked on it, the consistency inside was the same as it was when I put it in the oven an hour prior. I don't know if it had anything to do with using a graham cracker crust and/or using an electric oven. 375 degrees works much better.
Jennifer Thu, Sep 27, 2007, 3:50 PM
18. What is the best type of crust to use? I don't remember what they used on that episode.
Lindsay Wed, Oct 3, 2007, 9:00 PM
19. My Daughter and I Made the Brownie Pie on last Saturday I preheated oven to 375 that temp worked for me it was cooked and gooey at the same time although the pecans were a bit dark but good. I got comments on it and it is a fun dish to have kids help with also.
Angela Mon, Oct 8, 2007, 8:18 AM
20. I'm looking forward to making the brownie pecan pie, but I'm not sure which pie crust to use. The sooner I find out, the sooner my kids and I can make it.

21. really enjoyed the show, saw 2 back to back. Mom made me try the Pecan brownie pie, but at 300 for an hour it is still liquid center, raised the heat to 375, hope that works. We are in a high altitude (5,000 above sea level) and that may make a difference. Going to check in 10 minute incriments. I would die if he showed up at my house, my pantry is a disaster. Thanks.

22. This recipe is sooo easy to do! I couldn't find any pecans, so I tried it with some granola bars I had lying in my pantry. Just crushed it and used it as a topping. It came out great! It had that crunchy kick to it. Plus, I tried it with the vanilla ice cream with some chocolate syrup on top...yum!
Karen Tue, Feb 12, 2008, 4:04 PM
23. I have made this pie several times...it is so decadent and everyone loves it. You'll never be able to tell it was made with brownie mix!
linsey Wed, Jul 2, 2008, 4:16 PM
24. does it matter if u uses a homemade gram cracker crust i was wondering b/c i wanted to make it but it to taste good too.
Suzanne Mon, Sep 29, 2008, 11:20 AM
25. Made the pecan brownie pie TWICE &at;375 and the crust got so dark we didn't eat it, but the brownie part was fabulous! Thinking of making without a crust, but after reading comments, I may have used too big of a brownie mix. Hope the revised recipe lists ozs. of mix. Loved the show.

26. I keep trying to see the REVISED version of pean brownie pie, but there is NO 'read more' link on the web-site below the recipe as stated!

27. I know that this thread is a year old and that Pantry Raid is no longer on the air (I wish it was though, I loved this show) but I have to say that I make the Brownie Pie several times a year. Everyone thinks of it as my specialty and ask me to bring to work and parties all the time. So much so that I almost get tired of it. Anyway, I always cook the pie at 300 degrees, I just cook it longer than an hour. I just keep it in there until its done and it is always perfect. I will try at the higher temp though because sometimes I make it in the morning before work and it makes me late sometimes. The revised recipe is more clear now than it was two years ago. So thanks to whoever put them up.
