I purchased a royal blue knee-length dress for a youth church Thanksgiving service. I would like to wear a completely different color shoe. I thought about a mustard yellow. What do you suggest?

Of course, darling! There's nothing illegal about the pairing you've chosen; it falls loosely under the waning 2008 trend I call parrot colors: green shoes, yellow dress; candy-apple red shoes, purple dress...which brings me to another suggestion for you, which is a red shoe.

Either red like these Ninas, or yellow will work fine. (I'm not seeing a ton of mustard yellow this season, unless you count hot yellow mustard, in which case I like these peep-toes from Christin Michaels.) Throw in a platform on the bottom—another raging trend that shows no sign of slowing—and you'll look even hotter.

If you're wondering what color shoes the high-end New York runway models are wearing with royal blue this season (and, come on, you are) the answer may surprise you. It's black. Karen Walker's spring 2009 collection featured a few pops of royal blue paired with black shoes; so did Jil Sander's. Marc Jacobs paired his royal blue dresses with some sort of weirdly pink mystery shoe, but if that's high fashion, it's a bit too way-up-there for me. Black may seem like a sad or odd choice, but if you are really in love with the color of your royal blue frock, nothing makes that hue pop more than a black shoe.
