What Should I Wear to an Office Holiday Party?

Anthropologie Gregarious Dress

What do you wear to a company holiday party? I want to look sexy, but not inappropriate.

Style Spy Says: Berry

No, no you do not want to look sexy. I don't care how single-and-looking you are. I don't care if you work for Donatella Versace. Work parties and The Sexy do not mix. Ever. Save your urge to look sexy for the clubs, or the cocktail-party-slash-night-wedding, or New Year's Eve. For a work party—even a festive, champagne-fizzy holiday party—you want to look stylish, smart, future-forward. But not sexy. At a work party, sexy equals desperate. Leave it alone.

That isn't to say that your ensemble shouldn't whisper, "Look at me!"

Eye-popping colors are a great way to get attention without looking like you, er, also have a night job. I know I often steer my readers toward Anthropologie, perhaps a little too often, but that's just because the buyers there have made sure that you always have what you need. I recently invested in two killer holiday looks from that very boutique, including a gorgeous, double-layered plum creation with a thick, silk black obi sash. The store is also offering a fantastically genius black cocktail dress with just the right amount of "hello" for a company party, including a stand-away neckline and…oh, just look at it here.

Another fabulous option for you? A feminine take on the tuxedo suit, or a standout dinner jacket. Just stay with me for a second, here. Unless you're a boss, chances are you're having a little trouble being taken seriously at work, especially if you're the type who thinks that looking sexy at a work party is A-OK. A tuxedo suit—one with just the right amount of subtle plunge—emits the perfect message: Why, yes, I AM hot and smart, why do you ask? Did you need something? Get in line.  As far as brands go, no one does these looks better than St. John, whose zebra-print evening jacket is really all you need.

One final look to consider: The exotic. I strongly advise you to go for a look that takes you just outside of your comfort zone. Company parties are opportunities for colleagues to see you in a new light. Don't blow it by crawling into yet another scoop-neck LBD. Just look at what designer Joy Han has done with party frocks. Why not try one of her flowing, off-the-shoulder numbers for just a tiny bit of oomph without crossing the line? This minidress would look perfect—with an elegant pair of crepe pants, of course.

    1. I'm a country girl and love my wranglers and cowboy boots, but I'm tired of the same ol'. How can I chic it up but still hold onto my roots?

    2. How about a little black dress with a sexy make-up? Red lips are sexy and hot in Christmas time. For those who don't wear red lipstick at work * it cause too much attention at office). It's a prefect time to make yourself stand out with bright and sexy makeup in Christmas parties! Recently I found an online store www.beautilady.com. They have a huge range of premium cosmetics and skincare brand in discount price with free shipping! I have also found a deep red and bright red Dior lipsticks in 50% off for my Christmas party too! Such a wonderful and cheap bargain! Hope this would help to make you stand out from the crowd at Christmas!

    3. Hey Ladies, I have an office holiday party and this is what i'm wearing. A dark gold bow silk shirt * black satin straight leg pants and dark gold pumps. Accesorized with a black patent belt having a gold notch. Like the writer of this article said, you want to stay professional but stylish. Do not show off skin, but guess what! I believe "SEXY IS NOT NUDE"...
