Hitch a Ride with Hitch Couture

Sure, you can do like young Hollywood and get your fashion fix on hip Robertson Boulevard, but wouldn't it be more convenient if the hottest looks from tomorrow just showed up on your doorstep today?
That's the idea behind Hitch Couture, a swanky mobile boutique nestled inside a restored 1966 Airstream trailer. Though based in L.A., founder Jeanne Landau will also cart her wares to cities like San Diego and Santa Barbara for private parties. (She just asks for gas money when she makes excursions more than 25 miles from her Silverlake home.)
"Fashion in Los Angeles is so fast-moving. People here are incredibly fashion conscious and are always looking for more interesting stuff," says Landau, who stocks Hitch Couture with what she calls "rare treasures." This is why we were so taken with the trailer when we first spotted it at the Melrose Trading Post. (It's there most Sundays, should you want to check it out firsthand.) There's no way you'll look like a Jessica Simpson or Paris Hilton clone in Landau's finds.
Hitch Couture's collection comes from almost three dozen emerging designer brands, including Landau's own I Hate Labels line. Her fave? That would be Nichole Angelina Grazioli, who tears apart existing lingerie pieces and reconstructs them into one-of-a-kind garments.
"Hitch Couture is for people who care about having an original style," adds Landau's husband, Dan, who helps out with the business. "Everything we sell is hand-crafted and made by someone who cares—it's wearable art."
Expect to get your hands on all of this and more when you book the avant-garde Airstream. You might even make some cash. The trailer is a popular vehicle for bachelorette bashes and singles showers. In addition to giving the hostess a 10 percent discount on any item she purchases, Landau also forks over 10 percent of the total sales once they reach $1,000. Plus, she rewards the hostess or guest who contributes to another successful booking with a $50 gift certificate.
Getting paid for shopping? That's a trend we definitely hope will catch on!
