Ruby on Growing Up, Gaining Ground...and Gratitude
Wed., Jan. 7, 2009 5:39 PM PST by Ruby Gettinger
Ruby's got more to say about her experience shooting season one and saying goodbye to her first 100 pounds. If you missed her first finale post, click here to catch up!
I am so glad I got to go camping. It was the most amazing night. I loved it! I am definitely an outdoorsy girl. The best part of camping was being with Georgia and Jeff, of course, but the second-best part was sleeping under the stars! I LOVED hearing the fish dance in the water at night, listening to the birds and all the sounds of nature; the beautiful fire and the crackling noise it makes, the sunrise and sunset, riding and racing in golf carts.
I was amazed listening to Jeff's and Georgia's childhood memories. I never thought it was a problem that I didn't remember. My family always told me stories about my childhood—I just didn't remember. After seeing Dr. Brewerton, he informed me it was not normal to not remember your childhood. Then I started asking my family and friends if they remembered theirs, and they did. I started realizing Dr. Brewerton was right.
It is very scary to me, the unknown. Why don't I remember anything as a child? I do want to remember my childhood. I want to remember times with my family, the special times my mom tells me about and times with my siblings. So now I am on the quest to remember. There is a big part of me that is very fearful; it's the part that wonders why I forgot. But I have to find out the truth by going into the mental, physical and emotional.
I am so sorry if I have come off as ungrateful, whiney or complaining at times. Sometimes you may not get the big picture when they are editing. I am the most grateful person to everyone who has been in my life, on this journey, all of you!! I am grateful for even the worst people, because they help me become a better person. I am on a journey that is fun, scary, fearful and overwhelming! Some things I am doing for the first time. I am strong-willed, and I know what it's like to get an injury from working out—especially at this weight. I have to be careful and aware. I am eating new foods, and my palate is changing. It's hard, and I am being a scared brat at times about it, but I also overcome.
I want you to know that everything you see on the show is my truth. I would never, ever let the producers lie about who I am, and they never would! I will always fight for my truth. Because I know the truth will set us ALL free!
And just to set the record straight:
- I have never had an expired driver's license! I just went to renew it for my weight. That's when my sweet busybody Jeff had to make sure I got a refresher course on driving.
- Foxy and Lucy have doggie car seats.
- You all following my life unfortunately get to see every emotion come out of Ruby. Unfortunately for me—when I see it, I am humidified (humiliated and mortified)!
- Trying on those pants was hard mentally and physically! Very hard!! But I did it. I just don't feel like I should ever wear a pair of pants until I feel comfortable and when they won't make the bears want to run out of the forest. LOL!
- I started working at the age of 16 and only stopped a few years ago because of a heart problem and problems related to that. I have been on SSI, and I thank God for that. I would have crumbled and died without it. There was a time in my life when I couldn't do anything!! And, yes, at those times, I tried to beat it. I loved working when I did and I will again. I would never, ever take advantage of the system.
I hope this answers a lot of your questions.
Thank you all for being part of my journey. Thank you for believing in me, for supporting me and rooting me on. I truly love you all, and I am so proud of all of you for taking my hand in the spirit until we meet face to face. I'm proud of you for traveling down this road with me. I read your messages on the board and I get your emails on Facebook and MySpace, and I have written back so many of you, and I want you all to know you will get an email or letter back from me. YAY, YAY, YAY!
To all of you who are making baby steps or drastic changes in your lives and say it's because of me: I want you ALL to know that because of you, I am able to stay true and conquer the beast. Guess what—we are helping each other. YAY!
I pray that the message board continues to be a place where we all support each other on this journey. If we have any wisdom, let's give it. We are all on the same road! Let's fight this beast together and win!
Let's remember to be careful with our words and judgments, because you NEVER know about someone else unless you have walked in their shoes. And let's be honest: We will never walk in another's shoes! We may have similarities, but we will never know what it's like to be another person. So lets show compassion to all! Let's beat any beast we have.
Thank you to my family and friends for supporting and believing in me, for being patient with me on this journey and helping my reality be revealed.
Thank you, Style and Gay Rosenthal, for caring enough about me and this problem to help me bring the truth and a real face to this addiction. You are AWESOME!
Thank you, Gay Rosenthal Productions, for revealing my truth and helping me bring it into the light. Thanks to my team, Victoria, Harry, Paul, Nic, Ally, Whitney, Charlise, Jason and everyone back in the GRP and Style offices for working so hard and helping me beat this. YOU ARE DOING AN AMAZING THING for thousands of people! You should really feel awesome that you are saving lives.
Dr. Corse, Dr. Bradley, Dr. Brewerton, Reese Brown, Helen Hussey, Amy Bradley...Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your commitment and love toward me and for helping others overcome. But especially for being patient enough to give me the freedom to get there at my own pace. Trust is the most important thing in this battle.
And a HUGE THANK YOU to my other team...YOU, my friends! You are amazing!! Thank you for your push, belief and unconditional love! (3R's)
Check back with mystyle.com in the upcoming weeks for more from Ruby and her team of experts!

3. RUBY ROCKS!!!!
Vicki Wed, Jan 7, 2009, 11:43 PM
4. It kind of makes me mad that other people's comments caused you to have to "clarify" some things because, Ruby, you don't need to explain anything to ANY of us. I've never gotten the feeling that anything about you or your show is fake, and I've watched every single episode. You're just about perfect in my eyes. I really admire you for putting yourself out there; I bet you never figured on winding up with such a huge fanbase, did ya?!! Don't get distracted by the noise of few; instead, feel warm from the love of many! I'm one of the "many" who absolutely adore you! Do you realize that you have this incredible glow? There's a radiance in your face that is some kind of reflection of who you are deep inside. It's not something I've seen very often in other people. There's just something really special about you, Ruby!
Lindi Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 3:56 AM
5. Ruby you rock girl, keep it up cause a lot of us look up to you.cheers!

6. thank you for your bravery and honesty and for inspiring so many people to take charge of their happiness. There are many reasons why we don't honor ourselves and most are usually rooted deep inside our psche stemming from childhood hurts;..but thank God we have the choice to forget the past and move forward. Just move forward, don't look back and create something great. The best compliment you can give yourself, your loved ones and God is to live, thrive, pamper yourself, love yourself and be the best you. stick out your tongue at the naysayers.xoxxo
Amy Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 7:33 AM
7. Hey Ruby: I'm with Vicki. The only person any of us has to answer to is ourselves. That has been a hard lesson for me to learn in my own life. I think what you are doing in terms of sending 'Bertha' packing (lol) and getting healthy is amazing. I think it is even more amazing that you are facing your inner fears and demons with the world watching. I hope you are proud of yourself * I know I am proud of you. I have recently started my own weight loss plan. To help motivate me, I posted inspirations on post it notes all over my treadmill and bathroom mirror. You might laugh * and hopefully be touched * to know one of them says 'What Would Ruby Do?' Take care and I can't wait to see where your journey takes you next!
Jennifer Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 7:34 AM
8. Ruby, I am so proud of you. Those that have never had a problem with their weight don't have a clue. You have given me a new outlook, the one that I needed. I have been going to the doctor for months trying to get chloesterol and blood sugar on the right track. Unfortunatley now I am on medications to make it better. Because of your bravery I am now taking steps to get my life body into my control not the other way around. I have 1 grandson and a granddaughter on the way. I've got too much to live for to give up now. Keep trying to remember, that's where the key is at. I know because when I sit down alone and eat everything in sight, those memories are what always come to the surface first. Keep up the great work that you are doing and remember that you are not alone. We are all fighting with you and for you.
Meljohn Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 8:02 AM
9. Ruby, I admire all of your hardwork and determination. I loved your season finale and I can't wait until the show resumes. It's amazing seeing someone appreciate the simple things, like fishing and setting under the stars and also realizing how many people take such simple things for granted. God created all of these breathtaking adventures for us and most people don't even realize they are there. You are an awesome person and you deserve all the happiness and healthiness that you can achieve. It's great how your friends stand by you and how excited they get for you when you are accomplishing new goals. Keep up the hard work. I'll say a prayer for you and I hope that one day while I'm enjoying my camping trips I might run into you, of course you would have to journey to Louisiana or Arkansas for that to happen, but who knows! Best wishes!

10. Ruby I love your show becuase its so truthful and honest.. You are amazing and courageous!! dont give up and dont listen to negative coments. Your doing this for yourself and showing us how it may feel to be in your shoes.. People need to relax and if they dont like you show watch something else. Dont post coments on something your not sure about. People relax and support someone that needs your compasion which I think at times this society lost it somewhere... God Bless and keeping on lossing... Go Girl!!
Vanessa Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 9:13 AM
11. Ruby I am deeply touched by your show. Your honesty and the relationship you have with your friends is incredible. I see the love in hugs, laughter, stories and time spent with each other. All of our journeys are different. It is inspiring me in my personal journey to move forward from where I am and find a better understanding of where I have been. Thank you for sharing you with all of us!

13. Ruby Congratulation! you ARE an amazing woman. I have been with you from the beginning of your journey. I have laughed with you. cried with you and I also prayed with you. I am very overweight as well, and I started to clean up my act * I have lost about 30 lbs. and started to exersize. A recent knee surgery casued a minor set back in my exersize program, but your determination and strength got me going again. You are an angel, I don't have a group of friends that support me like you do. I am pretty much alone. But with each lost lb. I gain more self * esteem and determination to succeed. You are a God sent. The sincerity and love you have just makes you glow. I wish I had a friend like YOU. God Bless you and keep you safe and healthy as you continue to lose the weight. My prayers will always be with you. PS As for your circle of friends and family, You are the BEST Please continue to love and support Ruby.. She is ONE SPECIAL GIRL Oh, did I mention You are really beautiful
ta2_black Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 10:58 AM

15. Hi Ruby, I just had to write and say thanks for being such a brave lady....I totally agree with Vicki, there is a special radience that you give off and it draws people to you. I sat and watched your show and now find myself anticipating the next episode. You have restored faith and hope within me that I thought was long gone. I too have pulled out my excercise bike and have started taking evening walks with my son after dinner and I say an extra prayer for you and being thankful that you were willing to share your journey with us. Just know that the beauty you have within you is already shining through!!!
Vada Allen Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 12:30 PM
16. Ruby, You are just such a great blessing and so brave to go on TV with your whole life just hangin' out there! Whew...I don't think I could do that. But you of course are so giving and truthful it seems to be no problem to you. I appreciate that. I am praying that your show is a huge success and that all of us who are working on our weight, will continue to hang with you and be encouraged by your weight loss and all the accomplishments you will have through this incredible journey. We love and appreciate you. Vada Allen
Robin Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 12:48 PM
17. Ruby, you are the greatest! I admire you so much. You have given me the courage to become myself and not someone I think everyone wants to see. I have not be true to myself for so long I don't even know who I am. But because of you I am commited to go on this weight loss journey with you and find myself. I don't remember alot of my childhood, it's kind of patchy. Would you give me some tips on what to do to remember? I have heard you say "I will concour" it makes me realize I can too. It's now my new mantra. Ruby thanks for all you have done for me and others by just being yourself.
Anne Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 1:01 PM
18. Ruby, Just can't thank you enough for taking us along for your journey!! You are so brave!! Keep up the great work!! Love & Prayers, Anne

Jezebel Jones Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 2:35 PM
22. Ruby (and everyone), LOVE is the answer. Love of self and love of others. Many people on this list are positive forces in this world. Some people on these forums NEED HELP BADLY. And, SOME people on these forums are negative, very negative. It's their egos. They can't help but attack people just like some people can't help but eat that donut. They, curiously, have even farther to go to be healed than someone needing to lose 400 pounds. Attacking the attackers is also a lack of love. I do it sometimes, and then I remember that in addition to improving my health, both mentally and physically, I also want to continue to evolve to my highest potential in ALL AREAS and that that kind of "low negative vibration" is definitely not uplifting for me or anyone. If in EVERY endeavor we all (esp. us gals) supported one another like a dearly loved sister, how much better would we all be? How much better the world? Please, women, please...respect and love each other as you want to be.
Jezebel Jones Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 2:42 PM
23. That last comment wasn't directed at THIS grouping of comments. They're all very nice and positive. It's elsewhere on the forum that some of us are forgetting that we ALL want to reach our HIGHEST POTENTIAL and that someone's path to enlightenment may not look like someone else's. I just have VERY HIGH EXPECTATIONS for women in general. I KNOW what we are capable of and that is why my expectations are so high. So, anyway, I didn't want there to be any confusion. And I am so happy for Ruby. Because you can say what you like about how much help she has etc... but at the end of the day, it's all up to HER and HER ALONE whether or not she's successful, as it is for each of us. The more I help people lose weight, the more weight I lose. Come to my website and let me help you too, and you can help me. Things are looking quite well over at BringingDownThePounds.com * We share a lot in a respectful atmosphere and we are also Ruby fans (most of us met here) Please stop by.
Maryjane Carley Thu, Jan 8, 2009, 2:55 PM
24. Ruby, Wishing you the very best in your future. I know that no matter what may come your way you are strong and will face it head on. You are such a wonderful and warm person. A great gal I am honored to call my friend. The way that you welcomed all of us into your life with open arms and opened up about "The Beast" and so many other things just leaves me amazed time after time. Thank you for doing your best to make sure that you have takien the time to write back and show others support in return makes you so much more than I think even you realize you are. You are priceless my friend. I can't wait for Season 2. Keep your chin up and be proud of who you are, Keep Laughing, Keep up the GREAT work, Keep shining and God bless you always. Mj

36. OMG Ruby * if I could, I'd adopt you as my daughter! And your friends, too! My niece got me started on your show and now I am totally a Ruby-holic. I am an old lady, been fat most of my life, lost weight, regained it, and now at this age I just fee like 'why bother'. I'm fortunate in that I have few health issues that are life-threatening, I have a great job (even though I'm past retirement age), wonderful family, kids, grandkids. I cried when I saw you go with Dr. B into the house you'd lived in and didn't remember anything. I do remember my childhood, the good, bad and the ugly. I never realized how scary it would be to have NO memories. I applaud you for your courage and willingness to put yourself out there. I think the Lord must be braggin' on you something big, girlfriend! You are an inspiration for living TRUE * in all aspects * physically, emotionally and spiritually. I wish I lived in Savannah * I'd be trying to find you every day!!! Much love, Jan

38. Hi Ruby! Just wanted to say, first of all, that I think you're gorgeous!! I unfortunately don't get to see the Style Network, but I've caught bits and pieces of your story and I'm so proud of you! You're making a difference in others while trying the VERY hard way to make a change for yourself. It's definitely not easy, so keep up the hard work and know that you have sooo many people supporting you.
Debbie Serriano Fri, Jan 9, 2009, 4:02 PM
39. Hello Ruby. I just wanted to say I love the show and your journey to a healthlier way of life. I cannot believe some of the comments that I have read. People who watch your show know that you have a problem. You are working hard to be healthy. You can finally enjoy things that people take for granted like driving a car, going for a walk and being outdoors. I am so proud of you. I think that you are a very loving, giving person. People are always going to say mean things. With the economy the way it is in my profession I see people who once worked everyday. Guess what * They don't have a job, have no income coming in. Now the shoe is on the foot and they are asking for assistance with medical, food and public assistance. They are looking for a job but they can't find one because there are no jobs. Businesses are no longer in business. People should be sensitive and tolerant of other people. So, Ruby stay on the road to recovery, keep walking in your shoes you go girl.
China Fri, Jan 9, 2009, 4:56 PM

41. Hi! I LOVE your show and am SO PROUD of what you are doing! I think you rock and are absolutely beautiful and amazing! Among the many things I do here in Kansas City, I also host two talk radio shows, one of them called KC Metro Woman LIVE! I would LOVE to interview you via phone sometime soon. It would make my day and be such a treat for our listeners! I do hope you consider it! Go to my web site and check out a few things: www.kcmetrowoman.com Thanks for such a great show! I enjoy every minute of it! Ann Butenas
Marcia Fri, Jan 9, 2009, 6:07 PM
42. Ruby, You have overcome and accomplished so much. I was so thrilled when you lost over 100 lbs. I know how hard it is, how slow it seems to go, and how long it takes for the body to change. But I'm with you on the exercise thing for big people. Other shows that have 2, 3, and 400 lb. people running, jumping, squatting (with weights even), are setting them up for severe damage to their knees and ankles. You stick to your guns on that. You have shown how strong you are, walking the mile, camping, driving, and not needing to lean on an ex-boyfriend who wouldn't be good for you. You're above that. Put that strength into your voice and you'll sound more convincing. It'll show confidence even if you don't feel it. And keep up the good work. I can't wait to see your progress.

46. Ruby * You are awesome! I wasn't interested when I saw the ads about the show * I thought it would be another mean reality show. Your show is so full of hope and life and reality. I saw the first show by accident (tangled up in Christmas lights lol with no way to reach the remote) and have been your fan ever since. My husband and four sons have become your fans as well. We root for you every week and pray for you every day. Everyone has a struggle and so many people are willing to keep their own struggle to themselves and die rather than reach out like you are. You are a beacon to millions & not just those struggling with their weight. If it helps, my husband does not remember a lot of his childhood. We've been married 19yrs and I've learned talking to family members and friends to know that my husband's brain did a good job of protecting him and helping him become an adult. Mabye yours did too. I wish you all the best on the next leg of your journey. Amy

47. Learning to express your feelings for the FIRST time in your life can make you look like a "brat" but that's part of the journey... you become obese by stuffing all these "ugly" feelings down with food. You have to face and experience what you avoided with the food in the first place in order to get through it and move beyond it. I am on a parallel journey with Ruby and I know that for the first time in my life I am learning to tolerate and express feelings I used to "stuff" down with food. I used to just want everyone to think of me as a nice person so I'd eat all those negative feelings away and hurt myself and my health in the process, as long as I didn't make anyone mad at me! Now, people can go ahead and get mad, think whatever they want about me...that's THEIR problem!! People who love me know my heart, know who, what I really am. That's where the trust comes in...but you can't trust millions of people who don't even know you. Rock on, Ruby! Don't let ANYONE get you down!

49. Oh, my goodness, Ruby, such courage to go before America with your struggle. I admire you SO much. Keep up the good work, girl. I've noticed your beautiful face is popping out and your body has changed so much. I am 60 years old and diabetic, but you have inspired me to get moving again to drop more weight in order to control my diabetes. I can hardly wait for your new season, I imagine we will see another huge change by the time that starts.

50. Ruby, I started my battle/journey right before your show began. I have never been one to follow a "reality show", but yours has touched me. Following you every week has truly helped inspire me. I have lost almost 50 lbs. and am working on another 20 lbs. When I watch your determination and your spirit, I am truly moved and amazed. I know if you can do it I can do it. I have repeated your story to so many of my friends who are struggling with their weight. Keep up the fight, we're all proud of you in Southern Indiana!
