How do I look chic and sophisticated in a cape?

Hmmm. How to put this: Are you sure you want to rock it? Remember that Project Runway episode where the designer created a cape for Diane Von Furstenberg and was voted off? How about that recent 30 Rock where a fake Oprah named "sweater capes" as one of her favorite things? That was a joke against capes, you know.

"They're not really in," stylist Brit Cato tells me. "I have never had to style a cape unless it was a costume, but I would suggest that you only rock it when you're going out, not for work." Evening. Got it. Check.

As for what to wear with your cape, keep the bottom half of your body sheathed in something sleek and simple. "I don't think that pants, in general, would really look good," Cato ventures. "I think a pencil skirt would be best. It has to be form fitting." (Or try a pencil dress!)

Now, the accessories. Or lack thereof. Forget bangles. As irresistible as bamboo-style numbers are to me right now, I cannot recommend them with anything so dramatic as a cape. Stud earrings and a "huge ring" are all you need, Cato says. (No need to go insane on spending, either. Forever 21 has a bunch for under six bucks.) "Otherwise, you'll completely take away from the cape."

And you wouldn't want to do that, now would you?
