Product Review: Dermalogica's Clean Start Kit
Thu., Apr. 23, 2009 3:54 PM PDT by Staff
Dermalogica claims its new Clean Start line is the answer to teen skincare problems. We had a cousin and the little sisters of three Style staffers test the sample kit ($35), which includes the Wash Off (cleanser), Welcome Matte SPF (moisturizer), Ready, Set, Scrub! (masque and exfoliator), All Over Clear (mist) and Bedtime for Breakouts (overnight cream). Here's how it fared.
Pros: The moisturizer didn't leave me shiny and left me only a little bit dry. The masque left my skin soft and I felt a tingling sensation, which means it must be working.
Cons: The lemony scent of the mist was so gross—like warm 7Up or Sprite. I didn't like the overnight cream because it felt oily on my skin.
—Sherilyn D., High School Junior
Pros: Wash Off lathers really well and wasn't overly drying. The best product is definitely All Over Clear. Aside from the fresh scent, it was perfect before I applied the moisturizer and after I washed my face at night.
Cons: Welcome Matte didn't keep my face totally oil-free, but all of the other products combined were amazing so I can't really complain.
—Brynn M., College Freshman
Pros: The facial cleanser was light and refreshing, plus it never failed to remove all of my makeup, even around the eyes. The overnight cream was very helpful. I saw my acne disappear, and stay away.
Cons: The moisturizer was too thin and didn't hydrate my skin enough. I had trouble with the mist bottle because it failed to spray most of the time.
—Mollie K., High School Junior
Bottom Line: Most of the products in Dermalogica's Clean Start Kit were a hit with the teens.

2. i love clean start too. I'm so glad they started selling it online. the clean start website (cleanstart.dermalogica.com) is so much easier than finding a salon in my city who carries these products.

4. maybe it's just me but, i loved it. i especially love the way it makes my skin feel. before it i was always self-conscious about my skin because i was really oily and wit typical acne treatments it either wasn't strong enough or left me with wicked chemical burn. it was even so bad proactiv didn't put a dent in it!Now i dont have to put my make up with a spackling knife.

5. I tried the Welcome Matte moisturizerpros: sunscreen! no bad smell, even though initially i wasnt matte throughout the day i produce less oil i thinkcons: did not leave me matte, cant tell if it made acne worse or better, not quite moisturizing enough but not very drying either

8. The company was handing out free sample packets at my school, and I was surprised by how much I liked it! I LOVED the coarse scrub. I thought it felt really nice on my skin, and I liked the scent too. The over-night cream was good, but I personally couldn't stand the way it smelled... Other than that, great skin care product!

9. Okay, here is my "helpful" comment for those of you with severely oily faces. My face gets really oily only after few hours after I wash it. I tried ProActiv and this product worked really well. However, I felt like I was becoming addicted to the product. Also it is so strong that it changed the colors of all the towels in my house. After ProActiv, I tried Clearasil, Clean * Clear, A-Solution, etc. I recently started using the CleanStart wash, toner, and Welcome Matte SPF 15. I always had at least a couple of breakouts a day or two. However, after using these, I barely got any. Even if I did, they either disappeared or was small enough to not stress me out. I really love it. The only con about the product is that my face gets really dry even after the lotion (Welcome Matte). However, I'd rather have a dry and clean skin than to have moisture and pimply skin. I hope this helps those of you with severe breakouts.

10. Overall it evens out the tone of my face~ tiny bumps or maybe non breakouts at all when i use "bedtime for breakouts" the toner was so hydrating..sometimes i don't even put the moisturizer...(dont want it to run out so soon,as it is pricey) brighten up * welcome matte is good but not hydrating enough when it comes to an air-conditioned room.. I <3 CLEAN START..

11. I'm not sure I like clean start. I have had really bad skin since second grade and so far what people tell me to do is not working. My mom had really bad skin too and so does my sister, but my brothers' skin is fine. I started clean start after using the less recent product from dermalogica called mediback. The lady at trade secret said it would work but it had no affect on my raging oily skin. So I tried clean start. So far, it hasn't done much of anything. If it did anything, it made those nasties around my chin lots worse and the area around my eyes red and dry. I guess I will just keep using clean start until the bottles run out, or until I lose patience.

12. I have very sensitive, and when i first started using this product morning and night it quickly reduced my zits. However it dried my skin terribly, which not long after caused other zits. I started using the product less, about 5 times a week out of the 14 mornings and nights a week. This was way better for my skin. The other times i wash my face with a very calming aloe cleanser. Now besides a few pesky blemishes every now and again due mostly from college stress, I am zit free! The Toner is great too for zapping zits, I use it twice a week. The exfoliator i use once a week or once every two weeks. I would recommend this product to anyone with any skin type. If you have sensitive-dry skin i suggest using the product sparingly like I do. If you have oily skin I bet you could get away with using this product more often.

13. I recently started using cleanstart, and i love it! The cleanser makes my skin feel super clean, and i love the toner mist. The welcome matt spf makes my skin look oily, so i dont use that. The scrub is amazing, and i use it 2 times a week. Even though i do still get breakouts now and again, my skin feels healthy, and thats the important thing. Morning: Cleanser Toner Spf Night: Cleanser Toner Bedtime for Breakouts Scrub 1-2 times a week in the am(:
