Self-Tanning 101

Can't resist the siren song of a golden glow come summertime? We all know the dangers of prolonged exposure to sunlight, so baking in the backyard slathered in baby oil is a definite don't! Self-tanners have come a long way from their orangey origins, and we've got some tips to make them even more effective.
- Choose a light color to start—it's easier to add layers of color than it is to lighten a too-dark tan.
- Exfoliate your whole body with homemade shower scrub, then apply moisturizer to your rough spots.
- Slowly, evenly apply tanner to your whole body, avoiding your face. (Use a bronzer there instead.)
- Rinse your hands, using a loofah if you have to—orange palms are a dead giveaway!
- Use a warm washcloth to wipe off your knees, elbows and around your toenails—this is where lotion tends to settle in and stain.
- Wear dark, loose clothing for the next few hours to keep stains at bay.
- Do your best to avoid sweating for 24 hours or you'll streak.
- Apply your tanner early in the morning and then shower right before bed that night. After all, your sheets don't need a tan.
- Remember your sunblock to keep skin damage at bay! A faux tan doesn't provide any protection from the sun's harmful rays.
Self-Tanner Warning: Don't get it on your hair or your hair might turn orange. And don't apply every day, because then your whole body will turn orange!
