What to Wear to Brunch?

Got any suggestions for what to wear to a brunch?
—Kristi G., Rome, Ga.
What not to wear to a brunch is more like it—unless it's evening wear or a wedding dress, almost anything goes, really. The only factors to consider, of course, are where the brunch is and who is hosting. No sense in wearing a sundress to a dreary buffet hosted by a Scottish castle owner in late fall.
Your best bet is something that falls closer to smart than sexy. Too many women lean toward sexy; it can get boring, not to mention desperate-looking. A brunch is an excellent opportunity to wear those clothes that fall between office and evening—that favorite femme blouse, slim-cut capri, kilty thing, tiered skirt or future-forward dress that doesn't quite work in a boardroom. I know you have something like that in your closet—that bold kimono dress you always want to wear but can't because it doesn't quite fit the occasion. The brunch is a hybrid; it's an occasion that's hard not to fit.
So, final answer: You're freer than you think. Simply pick what doesn't otherwise fit.
