Which Brow-Shaping Method Works Best?

What are the benefits and drawbacks to waxing, threading and tweezing your eyebrows?

Eyebrows are really important. Not only do they frame the face, they can determine the winner of the presidential election! Last summer, some voters were put off by Michelle Obama's intense arches 'cause they made her look angry and severe. To quell the criticism, her makeup artist gave her a more natural arc—and all was well.

There are many ways to achieve brow perfection with waxing, threading or tweezing—the trick is finding the right technique for you.

Waxing is the most popular way to get professional brow shaping. Just ask "The Definitive Eyebrow Expert" Anastasia, "You get a more defined and finished look because waxing applicators allow ease of use in curving around the brow bone," says the shaper to the stars.

Although waxing can be a little painful, Anastasia assures that it hurts less and less over time. "When waxing there are two to three pulls in total, while threading can go over an area for a longer period of time, causing redness," she adds. Furthermore, while a professional eyebrow wax can cost anywhere between $25 and $40, Anastasia insists you won't need to schedule another appointment for two or three weeks. "Regular waxing will leave your hair growing back finer and lighter."

Then there's threading, a hair removal practice hailing from India that's become en vogue stateside. The precise procedure removes unwanted hair by skillfully pulling on a thread that is twisted to loop around a single hair. "Threadng is more gentle for your skin compared to waxing," says Christina Lee, one of Vinita's Beauty and Threading Studio's most sought-after eyebrow artists. "After a while, if you keep pulling on the skin with the wax, your skin can start to get loose."

Like waxing, threading does have an ouch factor, but you won't feel it in your pocket! It costs only $9.99 at Vinita's, and it will last two weeks to a month, depending on hair growth.

If you're looking for an even better brow deal, stick to tweezing. You only have to buy a set of tweezers once and you're set for years of convenient at-home eyebrow shaping. I recommend Tweezerman's Slant Tweezer, which comes with free sharpening and a lifetime guarantee. The downside to tweezing? The risk of accidentally breaking the hair in half, leaving the root of the hair in the follicle. It's also easy to overtweeze or get the wrong shape, leaving you looking semi-permanently startled.

To get the look of professionally groomed brows on a budget, your best bet is to get them waxed or threaded once every few months and simply maintain the shape by tweezing them yourself at home. You'll be looking high brow (without the high maintenance) in no time!

    1. Could you please put together some variety in your clean house re-runs? The Lara-Marquez show while very sweet has been so overplayed I could quote the entire episode. Let's see the messiest homes 1 and 2. Number 3 has also been overplayed! Because of the constant same reruns I've started to tune out, which is a shame. Your crew is doing an awesome service for these families and watching the show is a good time, but unless you are a 2 year old,no one wants to watch things over and over again. Is causing loss of viewers. My only other comment is for Ruby. She is an awesome, courageous woman. Putting her life and struggle on national TV is so brave. The only thing I could say is to tell her to stop whining. She is a grown woman, whining is for children. I get started watching and cheering for her as she works so hard to change her life, but when she begins whining it makes me sick and I turn the channel. Thanks for listening.

    3. I have to disagree with Anatasia * I have to go every week for eyebrow waxing. And I'd like to hear what and how to perfect the eyebrow color. I was born with very blonde hair and blackest, hairest of eyebrows. What do I do?
