Ask Thom: How to Marry Traditional and Modern?

Colleen's Living Room

My house is traditional, but I wanted to go a bit more contemporary with the new furniture I recently bought. How can I accessorize my room to pull it all together?

First of all, I think your place looks great! It definitely has more of a contemporary feel than a traditional feel. However, my recommendation would be to add a substantial, more modern piece of artwork behind the sofa. Transfer the three small decorative pieces that are there now, perhaps vertically to the left of the front door, or even laid out next to each other on top of the large glass window. The addition of modern art will be great. I also think that a simple, patternless sofa and chair pillows that have pops of color will start to bring more life to the space.

    2. Hello Tom, what colour scheme would you recommend for a house with a white background. The flour tiles are also in the white family. I don't like very busy or shouting colours. Thanks
