What Color Combos Are Great for Summer?

In the summer you have free license to mix and match bold color shades sans any neutrals. Banish those beiges and grays to the back of your closet and unleash your inner hue-loving hottie. The best part? Almost any color combination is workable. That said, there are a few recipes for color success to ensure you look utterly 2009.

A combination of vivid colors can certainly be pulled off—just check out Kate Walsh’s vibrant purple and cherry red outfit for inspiration. But try working your way into the bold-hued style first by pairing one intensely colored piece—think hot pink, orange or electric blue—with a slightly subtler color like yellow, seafoam green or a rich navy blue.

For specific color combinations, a safe bet is "yellow and purple, which I happen to be crazy over this summer," Urban Darling style maven Corinne Phipps tells me. "If you want to go hot and trendy, make the color neon," the fashionista advises. We personally love how a neon pink top and olive green pants coexist in fashion harmony. For a last surefire combo, a pastel lavender top plus a royal blue skirt equals instant fashion success.

And if you’re still color-shy, temper the style with a neutral accessory like nude-colored heels or a gray handbag. Whatever you do, no black! Throw that crutch away until at least Labor Day!
