Ask Thom: What Colors Will Make a Room Feel Spacious?

My new place has a living room with a fireplace and vaulted ceilings. I love color, so I would love to paint the room. What colors would make it airy and spacious? I am thinking of getting a cream-colored leather sectional—not sure if that should influence my wall color.

I love color as well, but when you're looking to create an airy, light feeling, you should use neutral colors. If you get my book and go to page 57, you can see an array of really great colors—from Trout Gray to Nantucket Fog to Soft Fawn—that would look perfect on your walls. I would leave the ceilings in a flat China White. Be sure to bring in pops of bright color with the pillows on your cream-colored leather sectional.

1. hi tom, i love my room and furniture and theres nothing i wanna change about that. my problem is i just dont have a clue wat my wall color should be. my room just has dark brown furniture and pink accessorize

2. I have a large great room which currently has a camel back buckskin leather sofa and chair, along with two side chairs in a print fabric. The wood furniture in the room is ecletic dk coffee tables with turned legs- an antique buffet utilized for the entertainment-large screen tv etc. My problem is my husband has a critical life threatening illness and spends a lot of time lounging-currently in the bedroom but would like to be able to spend more time in the great room. For medical/comfort purposes he would like me to add a recliner or chaise lounge to the room. I am not a fan of recliners so I am leaning toward the chaise lounge. What would you recommend and would you lean toward a print due to the solid leather pieces in the room. The leather upholstery in the room is almost light terracota in color,the room has wood floors and a very large corner rock fireplace. The walls are painted a very neutral (camel tone) with accents in olive green (tuscan colors) Recommendation?

4. I Live in Egypt and I have a challenge you want to go through!! My house. I have a nice house I have chosen every thing very careful but the result you really need to see. I wonder why do not you hold your show in my country and help me to dress my nest. I watch your show and from what I see I knew that I am in really big mess. 6. I need to know what would be the best colors to put in my living room. I have a small apartment, the sofa is black, 2 zebra print chairs and 2 purple ottomans, should I put the purple or another color into the space. I want a warm, cozy, welcoming space for relaxing and entertaining my 2 small grandchildren without a lot of mess. What colors should I go with.
