Ask Style: How to Skip a Trip to the Dry Cleaner's?

Woolite Dry Cleaner's Secret

Most of my work clothes are dry clean only, but I can't afford to go to the cleaner's every week! How can I keep clothes smelling fresh in the meantime?

We hear ya, sister! Skipping the dry cleaner's sounds heavenly, especially in this economy. Here are some tips:

• Wear layers! Body perspiration causes odors and oils, which make dry cleaning a necessity. Undershirts and tanks can act as a barrier between your body and the garment, preventing contact or, at the very least, reducing it.

• When layers don't work, buy a garment brush. After each wear, run the brush over your garment and allow it to air out for a day or two before returning it to your closet. Use Febreze's Closet Renewables to keep your closet smelling fresh.

• Try at-home kits. Woolite offers one called Dry Cleaner's Secret, which freshens up to 56 garments for just 20 bucks! All you have to do is spot-clean your garment and toss it into the dryer. Dryel also works for half the price of Dry Cleaner's Secret, but one pack only freshens up to 12 pieces of clothing and you have to use a protection bag (included).

If you need to have your favorite vintage Marc Jacobs dress cleaned and can't bear the thought of doing it yourself, check your local newspaper and mags for coupons. You might want to try different dry cleaners, too—some places offer a discount for new customers.

Hope that helps!

    2. You can also find a smaller package of Woolite dry cleaner's Secret at most grocery stores for $9.99. That package will clean and refresh 24 dry-clean-only clothing items. I save a ton on dry cleaning.

    3. Just cleaning and refreshening 4 or 5 sweaters will easily pay for the package. My husband found a jumbo package at Home Depot (but I usually buy it at CVS drugstores).
