Style Spy Says: Berry

To put it briefly: Unexpected color. Makeup artists are in love with blue and purple eye shadows. Bronze is also making a comeback in a big way; I attended a photo shoot the other day featuring the stunning Abbie Cornish; the bronze shade used by the makeup artist made her honey-colored eyes all the more unforgettable.

"Indigo and blue colors are the newest looks for this season," says John Henry, makeup artist for the DEX New York cosmetics company. "It can help you freshen your look with one easy change."

For a subdued look, Henry suggests "trying to wear a blue-toned mascara, eye shadow (DEX offers a stunning shade called Harlem Nights) or eyeliner with a toned-down lip." By "toned down," a makeup artist generally means a nude lip, such as Rain Cosmetics lipstick in Bare.

The other option is to pump up your lips. Vogue magazine is all about scarlet red, and that's fine, but for something a little more future-forward, try deep burgundy. And I mean deep, such as Sensai's The Lipstick in Murasaki.

"While the thought of sporting purple lips may seem too daring, it is a surprisingly wearable, flattering color if paired with a clean, flawless complexion and a smoldering, sophisticated or playful eye," says Juliano Gomis, national training director for Sensai Cosmetics

True that. It's almost a total makeover in a tube. And it's so easy to wear, you can even sport it at an office function. Gomis explains how: Keep eyes subtly sultry with soft, blended metallics in a pale gold shade, such as Sensai's Eye Shadow Palette 01. Skip the eyeliner, and instead make lashes stand out with Mascara 38°C Separating and Lengthening on the top and bottom lashes.

So: Blue shadow, burgundy lipstick. What's better during a recession than only having to add two items to your makeup bag?
