Ask Style: Can Real Women Rock Lady Gaga's Look?

Lady Gaga

Is there any way to adapt any of the looks in Lady Gaga's new "Bad Romance" video without looking completely insane?

Style Spy Says: Berry

While I cannot recommend purchasing a pair of 10-inch, bedazzled cartoon hooves, I do see some workable aspects to designer Alexander McQueen's work. And that's who we're dealing with, really. His clothes are all over Lady Gaga's video for "Bad Romance." As an ordinary person, you're technically out of luck, at least for a few more months; the McQueen looks presented in "Bad Romance" (and in McQueen's latest fashion show), were for Spring 2010; they aren't even all that available for mere mortals like us until the rainy months.

That said, the best, sanest way to embrace Gaga is to embrace the spirit of McQueen's Spring 2010 show. And you haven't seen it, you need to drop everything and look, right now.

Where was I? Oh, yes, adapting the look. You'll have to forgive me. McQueen can be rather distracting. The three major aspects to come out of McQueen's new vision are head-to-toe metallics, a hand-painted look—often in greens, blues and yellows—and structure, particularly in skirts. (The dresses McQueen debuted are actually digitally printed, so, yeah. That would work fine, too.)

McQueen is championing a nipped waist with a sort of bubbled, belled skirt, usually on the short side. That's fairly harmless; you can start there. The big side pockets on TopShop's acid wash mini-skirt has vaguely the same structured feel; ditto with its taffeta dotted skirt with pointed folds. Or try this structured skirt from Use/Unused.

As for the elaborate, hand-painted look, I wouldn't be adverse to heading to your local art museum and checking out the clothing in its gift shop. Yes, really. The key is to find something that has that hand-painted look but still carries structure (and a metallic) and aside from McQueen's singular vision, there aren't many places that can offer both in one stunning piece.

    2. Lady Gaga has trouble carrying off her look some times. While I agree there are workable aspects to her looks, aspects are not the "Lady Gaga Look." What has made it so standout is the entirety of it, not bits and pieces.

    5. GaGa is amazing. She's not afraid to go beyond what people expect. I admire and adore her for her freedom to do whatever the **** she wants without thinking of what people will say about her. I'm in the progress of making one of GaGa's outfits myself. You know why? Because I love it and it's INTERESTING. And FUN. Who gives a **** what fashion "experts" say. GaGa's all about expressing herself through her songs and her art, which she does very well. Certainly not everyone understands, but to those who do, she is a genius. I love her. I don't care what you people think, much less an 11-year old. Nothing is too far for GaGa. I love you, Lady GaGa. <3
