Any Makeup Tips for Spectacle Wearers?

Lisa Loeb

I wear relatively thick glasses and would like to know what kind of makeup to wear so my eyes don't get lost. I have chosen a smaller frame so the lenses aren't so thick, but they still tend to make my eyes look small.

If contact lenses or Lasik surgery are not in your future, fret not. Experts say it’s surprisingly easy to make your eyes look bigger, and without a lot of effort in front of a mirror. First, some basic no-nos: No dark eye shadow. No eyeliner, period. Both make those windows to the soul seem more like peepholes, according to top New York makeup artist Lyn Lynch.

Instead, she says, "Stick to light colors with a little shimmer to them." Lynch prefers the hues offered by Stila (check out our Test Drive for a look at the company's summer shades), and adds that they’re supremely easy to blend. Aveda's Petal Essence collection also sports some soft, glowing colors; my own favorites include Moon, Illumination and Aurora.

And an eyelash curler? Not optional! Makeup artists rave about Shu Uemura's well nigh legendary supertool, praising its ease of use. But Lynch is all about Tarte's version—and it costs roughly $3 less. Follow up with lots of mascara. (Try Sephora's Triple Action Mascara.)

If your eyes are still drowning behind those swimmy lenses, here's another tip from Lynch: "Instead of eye pencil, use a medium shade of shadow" around your eyes, something that "makes your eye look bigger, but soft at the same time."

One last tip for you, one that I learned years ago from Beverly Hills-based makeup artist Bobbe Joy: You can make any eye look bigger by taking a white eye pencil and gently skimming the inner rim of your eye. Voilà! Plum-sized peepers!

    1. I never knew that I should not wear eyeliner with my eyeglasses. Wow, I've been doing this for years. Now I know better. Thanks for the info.
