Ask Style: What's Homeopathy About?

Which homeopathic products can be used on skin, nails, shaving, etc.?

Now let's be clear. When you say "homeopathic," you refer to a branch of alternative medicine in which I am not trained. Furthermore, homeopathic results generally do not carry the collective weight of scientific evidence, so keep that in mind when I give you this answer.
Let's start with nails. Dr. Lauri Grossman of the American Medical College of Homeopathy recommends silica for fragile nails with white spots, or calcarea carbonica for brittle nails that break or peel easily. Both of those are oral treatments. "Once there has been improvement, you can stop taking the remedy unless symptoms return," Grossman tells me.
Let's move on to skin. Most homeopathic skin treatments deal with specific problems, like bruising. But there is one catchall that some homeopathic experts like.
"I sell a product that is pretty much the 'Windex' of all skincare issues, and it's tamanu nut oil-based," says Sage Organics owner Terri Chaseley. "My clients say it is the only thing to ever help their psoriasis. It is used for blemishes, eczema, burns, cuts, ingrown hairs, EVERYTHING."
In the case of, say, shave burns, you might want to try calendula lotion or ointment. "It promotes the healing of wounds and stops bleeding," Grossman says. "It relieves minor skin irritations from shaving or sunburn burns and is an efficient tool to help chapped skin and lips."
And let's say you get a little plastic surgery. Grossman says homeopathic treatments can help. "Arnica is the most important remedy for trauma and bruising," she claims. "It's great for black eyes; it is also a godsend for the swelling and bruising that can follow face-lifts or nose jobs."
Hope that helps!
