Ask Style: What's Up With Women and Menswear Shoes?

Sienna Miller

Why are so many celebrity girls wearing men's shoes?

Style Spy Says: Berry

If Nina Ricci’s and Dolce & Gabbana’s fall 2009 runways were any indication, you’ll no doubt be seeing starlets taking the menswear trend even further with pantsuits or tuxedo blazers this season. But for everyday, celebrity stylists say the oxford or loafer is a great way for most women to get in on the trend without teetering into Annie Hall territory. Plus, there are plenty of affordable ones out there.

Pair either style with a feminine skirt or blouse, like Sienna Miller did. "It's a very cute look and I approve," celebrity stylist Okera Banks dishes to me. "It's current without being too '50s."

Or you can play around with shoes that have some height, like an oxford wedge. Banks herself has a pair of penny loafers with a bit of height. She says, "I like to wear them with high-waisted trousers, and if I'm really feeling the look, I'll add suspenders!"

How can she get away with it? Because she's merely playing with the menswear look while keeping it feminine. "You're still a lady," explains Banks. "But with a shoe that represents some strength, without scaring anyone off."

Or mistaking you for your brother!

    1. I have been wearing this type of shoes for decades!!!! I am glad they are in right now. Ladys, this are the most comfortable shoes I have ever used. You'll become addicted!!!And everybody always compliment them saying how stylish they are. I am so glad, because it is hard to find them, before I could only get them in Argentina at a very expensive store, now they are going to be everywhere. Yeeeeeeehh!!!!

    2. Just wondering why you have Supernanny reruns on your show. Seems that it is always on. Does not seem to fit the format of your network. Very disappointing.

    3. Where is the wonderful show Ruby? It was one of my mother's favorite shows and she is housebound. When we found out that she could no longer watch Ruby because Style had moved to a digital channel because of Comcast, we got her digital boxes for her tv's. Now it turns out that was for nothing as she hasn't been able to see Ruby Gettinger nor find out anything about where she went.
