What can I do to get an overall good home manicure? For example, I hate when my polish bubbles up on my nails.
—Shirley B., Madison, Ohio
First things first: You should use only a small, thin layer for each coat of polish, and you should let each coat dry completely before applying the next one. I also ran this question by Claudia Vieira, an expert manicurist at Salon Capri in Newton Highlands, Mass. Vieira has worked on the hands of Jessica Alba, Marcia Cross and Jennifer Aniston. She informed me that, when it comes to preserving the smoothness of polish, slow and steady wins the race.
"Skip the fast-dry oils and sprays," she advises. (They also happen to make polish prone to chipping.) "It's better to let nails sit under a dryer, use a low-powered fan or simply air-dry. Trying to expedite the process with a product is risky."
Some other tips for an inexpensive but effective home manicure:

At SoBe Lifewater's Fourth of July pool party sponsored by Belvedere and EA Sports, America's Next Top Model Cycle 7 winner Caridee English dished to mystyle her fave DIY trick for sprucing up a summertime ponytail.
I like to pull the clasp off of a necklace and wrap the necklace around my hair tie after I've already put my tresses up in a ponytail. It's all about taking something simple and making it your own.

Don't have the cash to take the fam on vacay this year? Then bring the resort to you! It's easier on the wallet and doesn't involve any three-hour delays at the airport. Here are some ideas to get you started…
Step 1: Ambience
Pretend you're staying at a Maui resort by downloading a Refreshing Sounds of Ocean Surf mp3 ($0.99), resting your head on palm tree ($16.99) or coral ($19.99) throw pillows and lighting an ocean-scented candle. Try a flameless one ($10.99) so you can drift off into a relaxed state without a worry.
Or take a trip to Costa Rica by freshening the room with an organic rainforest scent ($14.95) and then reclining on tropical toucan pillows ($19.99) as you listen to a tranquil waterfall ($0.89) on your iPod.

Max Azria brought bandage back into fashion with the popular Hervé Léger dress. But now, celebrities are taking the sexy wrapped style to a whole new level. Welcome to bandage on the edge. It's as if someone literally wraps fabric around only the parts of your body that need to be covered—a bit of Leighton Meester's butt cheek peeked out under her Emilio de la Morena at the MTV awards! Fergie upped the paneled effect of her velvety Marc Jacobs by strapping on Christian Louboutin Differa's platforms while in Japan.
If you want to be super-adventurous, get some thick ribbon at your local craft store and wrap it around American Apparel's micro-mesh mini, securing the fabric with a hot glue gun. Or…just shop the new bandage-inspired steals 'n' splurges below.

Already Pretty is our feel-good read of the day. Blogger Sally McGraw explores fashion issues every woman struggles with—and shows how to overcome them via her own experiences. Uncomfortable in your own skin? So was Sally until she wrote a letter to her body last summer. Are your shopping habits getting out of hand? Sally's were too, so she implemented a $10/week shopping ban.
A full-time communications coordinator at the University of Minnesota Foundation, the "mini style guru" founded Already Pretty in 2007 at the urging of a friend who was impressed by Sally's style advice. The blogger's best fashion tip: "Clothes are tools. Use them to reflect your amazing self outward to the observing world." As for tips she's received: "Don't look at the size on the tag; look at the fit in the mirror." Agreed.
The self-described arty-eclectic, retro-influenced blogger wasn't always as stylish as she is today. In college, Sally admits to wearing Birkenstocks with white socks—inside out! These days, she dresses in inexpensive finds that look like a million bucks—the woman is a ridiculously amazing thrifter—and occasionally, in DIY projects that make us want to break out the glue gun ASAP. Take the necklace in the picture above, for example. Sally made it for $30!
Keep reading to hear more of Already Pretty's style secrets, including her smart thrift-shopping tips and how she survived a six-month shopping ban.

Rosettes are in full bloom this awards season. The floral accent was seen on Jordin Sparks' electric blue satin strapless number and Jessica Stroup's gorgeous off-the-shoulder Hervé Léger colorblock dress at the People's Choice Awards, and on Heidi Klum's vintage James Galanos polka-dot pouf frock at the Golden Globes. We love how the 3-D detail adds a bit of drama and whimsy to any look.
But before you go plucking a fresh rosette dress from the stores, consider pinning a rose brooch to something fabulous you already have hanging up in your closet. That way, you and the embellishment won't have to be attached at the hip! (We can't all be as lithe as the stars and boast a tiny waist.) You might want to draw attention to your shoulders by fastening a rosette to a dress strap or even to your cleavage, corsage style.
