We usually avoid the dreaded hat head at all costs, but we're reconsidering after seeing stars like Christina Aguilera and Jessica Alba in their knit beanies. The cap can invoke a look that's urban chic or Parisian sophisticate. Plus, decorating it with pins to complement your outfit is loads of fun. The matchy-matchy handbag and Marc Jacobs dress even works for us—after all, she's in Victoria "Miss Monochromatic" Beckham's home country. Far out, man. But before I turn you hip to a hat, know this: The term "hippie" has evolved, or perhaps I should say, devolved, since its introduction several decades ago. "Hippie" used to refer to a specific type of youth counterculture marked by long hair and flowing or multi-ethnic clothes, and punctuated by either a nature-inspired palette or a psychedelic one.

We're taking our hats off to stars like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Ashlee Simpson for looking so sexy in what's widely considered a men's accessory: the fedora. "Fedoras give a woman a sassy, confident air," says image consultant Eve Michaels. "They are mostly for casual fun, but can be worn dressy if the fabric is elegant." Regardless, be sure to pair the eye-catching topper with a clean and tailored silhouette.

Casual Newsboy Cap
"This is the ideal out-and-about day hat," says hair stylist Candice Birns. It looks best with loose long locks like Lindsay Lohan's. 

Valuable Tip: Since hats can make you sweat, Birns recommends pulling bangs to one side to avoid pimples.

Glam Girl Fedora
